Sustainability
Environmental and social responsibility is at the core of our offering. This is achieved through a number of initiatives:
1. Renewable energy (low carbon renewable systems for electric and/or heating):
-
- Trevase Granary is powered by an Anaerobic Digester (AD plant) which also powers the farm (and creates power for the National Grid). Any excess heat produced from the AD plant is used to heat the Granary.
- Penblaith Barn is heated by a biomass boiler using wood pellets (renewable fuel, produced in the UK) to heat the property and the water. This allowed us to stop using gas (fossil fuel) and the ash is being used on the borders in the extensive grounds. In addition in 2023 we invested in a 20kWA solar panel system, and battery storage (for overnight use), to power the property.
2. EV Charging: Each property has three car electric charging points and guests enjoy complimentary charging throughout their stay.
3. Insulation: large investments have been undertaken to ensure both properties are fully insulated to minimise heat escaping.
4. Klargester system: Each property has its own Klargester to recycle human waste into water suitable to drain away into water courses.
5. Lighting: Sensor lights and lights on timers are used in communal areas throughout each property to avoid lights being left on unnecessarily. In addition, we only use LED light bulbs as they are low energy, long lasting light bulbs.
6. Toilet flush: All toilets have a dual flush.
7. Recycling: We heavily promote recycling through -
- Ensuring it is as easy as possible for guests with detailed information on display at each property and signs on each bin to inform them of what can be placed in that bin. We also talk through our recycling policy with guests on arrival.
- When guests leave we check the bins to ensure rubbish is in the correct bins, occasionally having to sort into the correct bin.
- We recycle all light bulbs and batteries separately.
8. Recycling of furnishing, fixtures and fittings: Any items which are replaced but still in good condition are sent to a local charity. For example, mattresses, linen, towels.
9. Bulk purchasing of guest supplies and housekeeping products: Where possible we purchase large containers of guest supplies and cleaning products and decant to reduce packaging, for example hand-wash is purchased in 5 litre containers and existing packaging is refilled.
10. Charity support and local event sponsorship: When vacant we are happy to host charity fundraising events making use of the spacious areas. For example, we have held a MS and Pancreatic Cancer charity fundraising auction. In addition we are happy to support local events.
